CD Review: “Shallow Bed” by Dry the River

Dry the River has been compared to bands like Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes, and Noah and the Whale. The band is from East London and is fronted by Norwegian born singer/songwriter Peter Liddle. guitarist Matt Taylor, bassist Scott Miller, violinist Will Harvey (also plays Mandolin and Viola) and drummer Jon Warren.

After critically claimed live performances at Glastonbury and South by Southwest, the band gathered the music industry’s attention. By the end of 2011 they had released their debut EP with National producer Peter Katis. The band’s first full-length studio debut album is Shallow Bed.

The album leads off with “Animal Skins, ” which begins with bass guitar and goes into the mix acoustic guitar and electric guitar, while Liddle demonstrates his unique vocal talents and range. “New Ceremony,” the second track, starts off with a gentle melody that goes on to a level that is passionate and emotional. The song is about dealing with relationship issues. With lyrics like, “It’s anybody’s guess how the angel of doubt came down and crept into your bed,” anyone can relate to the point in a relationship where it comes to a standstill and doubt creeps in.

CD Review: “A Joyful Noise” by The Gossip

Dance-punk trio The Gossip returns May 22 with a fifth studio album, A Joyful Noise, via Columbia Records. Brian Higgins of Xenomania and front woman Beth Ditto produced the record.

The band recently dropped their single “Perfect World.” The Gossip, a band who is minimalistic in nature, consists of Ditto, along with guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie. In the past the band has been described as Beth Ditto’s soulful voice mixed with a funky punk soundtrack. The band’s first release off the album, “Perfect World,” illustrates this notion with romantic lyrics (“In a picture perfect world we can be more than before”) backed by Eighties beats, making for an eclectic and fresh mix.

CD Review: “Blunderbuss” by Jack White

Jack White cuts to the chase with all of his wonderfully gritty lyrics in his first full-length solo release, Blunderbuss, which debuted April 24 via Third Man/Columbia Records. For an artist that has borne his name over the past five years on multiple projects, including being a co-conspirator on The White Stripes and a featured member on The Raconteurs and Dead Weather, it is more than refreshing to hear White stripped down to the bone.

Blunderbuss is a truly dynamic album, seeming to incorporate components from nearly every project White has worked on. The album consists of an electric piano composition artfully combined with elements of old soul culminating in the album’s first single, “Love Interruption.”
