StoryCorps to visit Gainesville
Have you ever wanted to write a book so you could share your memories with future kids and grandchildren? Ever kept a meticulous journal so you didn’t forget any of the details? StoryCorps feels the same way about history- and they’re coming to Gainesville February 23-25 to preserve the history of community members, library patrons, staff and supporters.
StoryCorps was founded in 2003 so that Americans of any persuasion have the opportunity to have their stories and memories preserved for future generations. More than 70,000 people from all 50 states have taken advantage of this opportunity since the creation of the organization.
StoryCorps is coming to the Library Headquarters downtown to record the lives and lessons of Gainesville community members, especially highlighting the relationship between the library and the community. The visit by StoryCorps is part of the National Medal Award that was presented to the Library District in December of 2011 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Slots for interviews over the three days filled up quickly. Participants can take home a CD of their story and if permission is given, a copy of the participant’s story will be stored at the Library of Congress and the Alachua County Library District.
Check out the Library’s page for more information about the StoryCorps visit.
