If you Have to Cry, Go Outside: and Other Things Your Mother Never Told You by Kelly Cutrone and Meredith Bryan

Gainesville EntertainmentWe’ll be honest. It’s rather nerve-wracking writing a review of Kelly Cutrone’s book, If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: and Other Things Your Mother Never Told You, out now through HarperOne. Fans of MTV’s The City will know that she isn’t what you would call “the warm and fuzzy type.” However, in this quickly moving memoir-slash-women’s-power-advice-book, the uber-publicist explains just how she came to adopt her “mama wolf” approach to running her company, marketing firm People’s Revolution. And you start to realize that really, she only wants what’s best for you—if you’re willing to f**king work for it.

Story by Maghan McDowell

The book explains all the gory details of Kelly’s progression from upstate New York high-schooler to drug addict, to tarot card reader, recording artist and finally mom, including with it her tips for survival peppered with trademark F-bombs and even the details of her daughter’s birth; at least, we hope this isn’t the calmed-down version. She even explains some of her more eccentric characteristics: her intuitive hiring style; her cutthroat yet selfless mentoring of young women; her reasons for wearing all black with no makeup. She even teases us that her next step just might be hosting a talk show. And we can’t wait.

For those of us who are sad at tomorrow night’s season finale of season two of The City (they haven’t yet officially announced a third season), this might be just what the doctor ordered—more of the real-world, New York City-based lifestyle that fuels our “passion for fashion” and more. Sorry, Kelly; couldn’t resist.

P.S. Believe it or not, we even counted two times when Kelly indeed cried at work. See? This mama wolf is human.
