You can catch the on-screen superhero as the voice of Wolverine in the film’s companion video game, as well as in the upcoming Drive, where he plays a Hollywood stunt performer. We caught up with Hugh and asked him about media scrutiny, sexy antiheros and a day when his wife came on set—and saw him in a rather compromising position. By Prairie Miller ![]() You got a lot of positive feedback about your stint as the host of the Oscars this year. Do you think you’ll host again? I have to be asked. You know how that thing works! So did your career change after starring in the first X-Men? Like, amazingly. The scripts started pouring in all of a sudden. I was like, “Whoa! Hang on a second! Hold the phones!” But I was really nervous about [the first X-Men]. I feel it's more personal to me. It's more my baby. Did your off-screen life change after X-Men’s success? In my personal life—apart from having children, which is of course the ultimate change—there was little difference. So it's like an ideal situation. I was kind of afforded all the open doors of Hollywood and still kept my normal life. So that was good. Your wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, is also an actress, but does she ever get jealous about the women you get close to in movies? You know, everything is double-edged, ain't it? But Deb understands—though there's that part in Swordfish where Deb happened to be on set as a coincidence, and I didn't know it. It was where a woman was doing, you know, that indecent thing to me under the table while I was sitting at the computer. What did you do when you saw her? I was like, “Deb, this was kind of not the best day for you to come!” And she said, “Why not?” And I'm like, “Well, I don't know if you feel that comfortable.” And Deb went, “Oh, c'mon you.” So Deb walked up to the girl and said, “Oh, hi. I hear you're the one doing that indecent thing to my husband today!” And the girl nearly died. She was going, “I'm so sorry. It's in the script.” And Deb goes, “Oh, don't worry. You're getting paid for it!” This is the fourth time you’re playing Wolverine in a film. What keeps drawing you to this character? When Wolverine appeared, he was a revolution, really. He was the first antihero. There were not just good guys versus bad guys, but an internal battle of good and bad going on within the character. But I had a really good go in [the first three X-Men movies]. Wolverine did get quite a lot of screen time, and you got to know a fair bit about it, but I still felt there was a hell of a lot of mystery to him. Is there any music that gets you into character? Not on set. But when I train, I listen to Godsmack, which is the kind of music I would rarely listen to. And I'd listen to it really high, as loud as I can. Sometimes it's a little embarrassing when you're in a public gym! But for me, that was as close to Wolverine as I could get.
As Will Smith says, it's easier to stay ready than get ready. I don't know if it's true, but it sounds pretty right to me. Trust me, I'm on a much more relaxed regimen than when I was making this movie. Do you do five-mile runs like Will does? Is that what he does? I do a lot of trapeze work right now. I'm working on the trapeze five days a week. I do that because it's fun and different, and I needed to get out of lifting weights. But I go back to the gym sometimes. I do a bit of everything, but I make sure I enjoy it. How do you de-stress after playing Wolverine? Playing Wolverine is great therapy, really. You get to exorcize a lot of your demons, and then go home feeling very, very relaxed and happy. What do you think is the weirdest thing about being an actor? Some directors don't like to rehearse. And so often, you can turn up the day before and meet someone who is playing your lover. You’ve been getting lot of publicity for this role, so how do you hold up under media scrutiny? I'm no good at that at all. I'm definitely thin-skinned when it comes to reading that stuff. And I'd probably get riled up if I caught up with somebody trashing me! What did you think of those rumors saying that you’re gay? It just seems to me that there are a lot of more important conversations to have. That's how I've always felt about it. I don't judge people on that at all. I don't care.

Even a heavy beard and killer claws can’t hide the fact that Hugh Jackman is one good-looking mutant. People’s 2008 pick for the Sexiest Man Alive hits the big screen this month in the much-anticipated X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a prequel to the X-Men trilogy that details Wolverine’s violent past and his relationship with his brother.
You had to get in great shape to be Wolverine. Are you keeping up your physical regimen now that filming is over?
