Gainesville EventsSeeming more as a side course to a hearty meal, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner flips to the darker and more unruly side of vampire life while detailing the events leading up to the battle between newborn vampires and the Cullens from Stephenie Meyer’s other novel Eclipse, the third installment to the Twilight Saga.

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Through Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire, the story is told about the creation and deception of twenty vampires, who are led to believe a lie in order to serve the purpose of one spiteful vampire’s wish—to kill Bella Swan. In Bree’s world, your own kind is your worst enemy, threatening to dismember, or worse, torch you for simply being noticed.

Meyer strips away the more gentle features of her vampire world—like sparkling skin and feeding only on animals—and delves into a more corrupt and violently destructive world of vampire against vampire. The novella begins with Bree hunting with members of her clan in the early hours of morning when only the scum of humanity would be out chancing a walk amongst the dank alleyways of Seattle, Wash.

Learning to appease her burning thirst for human lifeblood, to stay concealed by the gloom and murkiness of night and otherwise to stay alive, Bree finds herself sorting through the lies she’s been introduced to and discerning that she should be weary of the motives of her leader Riley, and who Riley calls “her”—their maker.

Still appropriate for the regular Twilight fan, Meyer keeps it simple once again in this much shorter piece. For the first time since the Twilight Saga, romance has been kept on the back burner but still sizzling between Bree and Diego, another newborn vampire who shares her suspicions of their leader. Unlike the Twilight saga, there is no sudden miracle towards the end of Bree’s short vampire life, so don’t expect a typical happy ending, but one that casts truth on how tragic the typical vampire life is.

The novella is short and to the point, and if you haven’t read Eclipse, this short read will drop you right into the Twilight Saga like a river into an ocean, forcing you to delve into the magnitude and beauty of Meyer’s vampire world.
