If the pressures of life have you retreating to childhood, the Reitz Union Cinema is offering a chance to regress with Pixar’s latest animated film, Toy Story 3. Pixar was certainly saving the best for last. Toy Story 3, showing at the Reitz on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday at 8pm and 10:30pm and Wednesday at 10:30pm, tops the original two, making it an early front-runner for this year’s Best Animated Picture Oscar. As a grown-up Andy prepares to move out for college, Andy’s toys must decide what their future will be—but they first find themselves donated to Sunnyside Day Care, where the toys are ruled with an iron fist by a malicious strawberry-scented teddy bear.
For a mature contrast, check out 9500 Liberty, a thought-provoking documentary about immigration from directors Eric Byler and Annabel Park. Showing at 7pm on Wednesday, Sept. 29th, in the Reitz, 9500 Liberty portrays rising tensions in Virginia’s Prince William County, as local elected officials pass a measure allowing the police to question anyone they have “probably cause” to believe is an illegal immigrant.
Want to have the skinny on a blockbuster before all your friends see it? The Reitz Union will host a free advance screening of the much-buzzed about Facebook film The Social Network. The show starts on Tuesday, Sept. 28th, at 8pm, but spectators should expect to show up a couple hours earlier in order to grab one of the remaining unreserved seats. Directed by the Oscar-nominated David Fincher and starring Jessie Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the film follows Zuckerberg’s rapid rise from lowly Harvard undergrad to history’s youngest billionaire.
Finally, head downtown to the Hippodrome Theatre for a little French flair (for a few bucks), with the film The Father of My Children (Le père de mes enfants). Screening Friday, Sept. 24th, through Thursday, Sept. 30th, this film, the winner of a Special Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, shows a life on the edge of disaster. Gregoire Canvel, a charming film producer with a beautiful wife and three kids, finds his life often interrupted by the demands of his work, as his production company struggles to escape debt. Tickets to the Hipp Cinema cost $7.50 for the general public.
