Jazek Creacy from the Debutaunts

Debutaunts band The first time I heard Debutaunts , I was riding shotgun around east Gainesville in a white Trans Am through the sun with a friend. I was immediately struck by the sharp, shiny guitar parts and fist pumping accuracy of the percussion on the album Flowers From Evil. The new album Why Can't We Have Fun is slicker, sweeter and a clear decision to step up to the plate from the members of the band. My life is a seemingly endless series of intersecting circles, so my newfound introduction of the band included an interview with lead singer Jazek. Let's let the man speak for himself.

You just finished a new record. Can you tell me about it?
Basically we took all of our inspiration, and we kind of set it aside and buried ourselves here in Atlanta. We moved out here from Gainesville two or three months before we went into the studio, and we hashed out these songs based on pure intuition. One of the songs has a full string quartet in it and another has a bunch of synthesizer [stuff] in it. In the end, funny, it all kind of came together, and it sounds like an album, you know?

What's your favorite song on the record?
I like a song called "This Is Yours." Do you like The Smiths?

There's like two Smith's songs I like. I like Morrisey's solo stuff better. Isn't that weird?
Did you hear his new thing? He's getting old man he doesn't sound the same.

He's such a tortured gay man though.
(Laughing) No! He's a-sexual. But yeah, no totally we dig his stuff a lot, and we had a lot of that kind of influence, and that song in particular has a really strong Smiths vibe to it.

What's it about?
A lot of the songs on the album are about relationships. I just sound typical (the relationship stuff), but it goes "This is yours if you'll have it. Are you sure that you want it? Oh very well then. I have to thank you for making every single word mean so much more."

Oh, that sounds romantic.
Yeah kind of, but it's kind of like a fuck you song. Really it's saying I chose this over you. I chose to start in music over you, so it's kinda evil.

So did you choose to do music over love? What's your view on that?
Oh Jesus Christ. I think there's a certain point where you have to kinda decide if you're going to do something for real you know? And you shouldn't have to, in a perfect world you wouldn't have to. Basically I lived with someone for a long time and I moved out here because I said "If we're gonna do this band thing we're gonna do it right." So I guess in a way I did.

Did you produce this record yourself?
No. We had the producer we worked on our last EP with, his name is Matt Goldman. He's produced (bands like) Underoath, Copeland, Amberlin and Cartel.

Are you going to tour in support of the record?
Yeah definitely, we're going to tour all spring and summer. We have a lot of stuff going on right now. We're shooting a music video for "Everything's Perfect" that's going to be on Fuse and mtvU, this weekend actually. Every song on the album, we're putting specific content out for; whether it's a video, or a sketchbook, or some kind of live performance or video.

What's your favorite color?
Um, probably green.

Why?
Its fresh. Trees are green. My shoes are green right now. I just looked at them and it made sense.

Who's musical career do you respect the most?
Morrisey's not doing to bad for himself.

He's such a badass.

Listen to the new album online!
