Scott Suldo, a.k.a. Skart, sings and plays guitar for the Orlando reggae/ska band The Supervillains. Tomorrow (June 10), you can see the band at the Common Grounds. But first, we disturb Skart’s beauty sleep (at 2pm!) to get the scoop on mandatory mustaches, pranks and how to score a free T-shirt (it’s not pretty).

OK, so we gotta know. Is there a story behind the name “Skart”?
Yeah, kinda. I’m from near St. Cloud, and we’re kind of rednecks. People don’t like washin’ their hands; they like to warsh ‘em. They put unnecessary R’s in words, like, “Yeah, I was in the morsh pit.” So that’s how it happened.
So we hear your fans do some crazy stuff for free stuff (i.e. letting the band spit in their mouths, getting kicked in the balls). What would you like to see someone do at this concert for a free shirt?
That’s just a Gainesville thing—I don’t know what it is. There must be something in the water. These kids are like, “I’ll do anything.” I don’t know, man. I felt so bad about the kid getting kicked in the balls.
What songs do you sing at the top of your lungs in the shower?
Um . . . Thriller. I don’t know. What’s that Hall & Oates song? (Sings.) “So out of touch, so out of touch.” (Out of Touch.)
So, I’m guessing you guys like to party. Am I right?
We’re party animals. We wake up at 2 in the afternoon.
Which town do you think parties the hardest?
Oh man, (Fort) Lauderdale always shows up. Gainesville’s always a good time. But I’m gonna have to pitch for the home team and say that Orlando pitches pretty hard.

What are some of your favorite songs to play live?
We have a new one I love to play called The Way That I Like It. It’s just a really fun song to jam to. And I love playing Hey, F_ _k You, anything that’s fun. All of our songs are pretty fun, but Hey, F_ _k You has got a good thing going for it. We have a lot of new songs. I probably like playing them a lot more because I’ve played all the other ones a few thousand times.
If you could have any artist featured in one of your songs, who would it be?
That’s a tough one. Um, I don’t know, man. Probably Elvis Costello, that’d be dope.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you on tour?
One time—like, this is fully all around embarrassing—back in ‘06 we decided we should do the Mandatory Mustache Tour. You can’t shave it, and you can’t trim it. The first month was funny, but after two months on tour we had full-on, three-month mustaches. We looked like a bus full of molesters. It was pretty horrible.
How long did it take to get those epic dreads?
I actually clipped them last year. They were a lot longer. Probably like nine years. Yeah, my wife clipped them last year because I kept stepping on them when I was surfing. It’s just not fun surfing like that, with a 40 pound wet anchor behind you when you’re trying to paddle. You know the day when they get too long.
When you’re on tour, do you ever pull crazy pranks on each other or get into fist fights?
There’s a lot of farting, a lot of getting farted on. I don’t know. Dom’s a pranker; you have to watch out for Dom. He’s always trying stuff on people. The drummer from Mad Caddies (Brian Flenniken)—real quiet dude. Next thing you know, you try to light a bowl and your lighter explodes. Or, he’s got it rigged so it burns your eyebrows off. We’re pretty bad, we know how to prank some guys pretty hard—we’ve picked up some tricks over the years. I can’t divulge too much information, though. I don’t want our pranks foiled when they read about them in a Gainesville magazine.
Best and worst thing about being in a band?
Best thing is you’re a rock star, I guess. Pretty awesome. The worst thing is not seeing your peeps, being on the road 260 goddamn days a year. But it comes with the territory. Especially us, man, being Floridians. When you’re out in all the snow and all you wanna do is go surf without a wetsuit, you’re like, “This snow stuff is overrated.”
Is there anything in particular we should look forward to seeing at the show?
Uh, dudes getting spit in their mouths, getting kicked in the dick. I don’t know, maybe a dude in a chicken suit will throw up or something. Look out for our new songs. We’re on tour, and this will be our last time in Gainesville for a bit.
DP, Half Track and Cardboard Paradise will be opening for The Supervillains on Thursday, June 10 at Common Grounds. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $10.
