Friday night featured a reggae party at Double Down Live with Morning Fatty, Coquina Kings, Supervillains and KayaVibe.
Sadly, I missed the first two bands due to other commitments, but I was there when KayaVibe had the fans dancing to some reggae sounds from Vero Beach. They recorded for the Supervillains’s Rah Rah Rah Records label (and even made it to No. 2 on the iTunes reggae chart). DIY reggae-oriented bands such as Slightly Stoopid, Pepper and Rebelution are currently quite popular on the road, and KayaVibe were definitely well-received in Gainesville.
The Supervillains just finished touring with Fishbone and decided to headline a show in Gainesville on their way home to Orlando. They are touring in support of their first album (and sixth overall) on Rah Rah Rah Records, Postcards from Paradise. They were in a celebratory mood—they had their main roadie bringing them shots all night and kept mentioning partying—so it seems the album is doing well.
Because they are based in nearby Orlando, Supervillains will probably be back before you know it. You can find out more about them in our interview from last year.
