The Vault Party was Aoki

aoki-teaseThe Vault hosted a sold-out electronic dance music party last night. EDM fans turned out in their finest club clothes for the show. Fashion was not the prerogative, however, as many fans were not wearing much at all.

Despite the chilly weather outside, it was a hot, sweaty club show inside the Vault. I even fit in with a Cartman “Respect My Authority” t-shirt and jeans (not skinny leg; please, I’m not that indie). It was definitely an all-inclusive show.

I got there just in time for a set by Gainesville’s own Vijay Seixas, and he had the packed venue shaking, hopping and grooving to his mixes. Somebody has to break out Adele at an EDM show, and Vijay dropped it near the end of his 90-minute set.

aokiBut the main attraction was Steve Aoki, who came on at midnight and upped the party atmosphere for 90 minutes. He mixed some classics and some new material from his recently released album Wonderland (already top 10 on iTunes).

Aoki is known for his onstage antics while mixing beats, and last night was no exception. The crowd was sprayed with liquor, champagne, soda, juice and water. Aoki capped it off with a huge bucket of ice water and dumped a cake on one fan up front. He had a hose to spew fog over the fans and a raft so some fans could crowd surf in style. And Steve crowd surfed several times too (bareback, no raft). The fans loved it and were begging for more when his set ended.

When he talked between tracks, it was clear he loves playing Gainesville as much as Gainesville loves having him. He loves performing in Florida so much he will return to the state next month for the Deadmeat tour (which starts next week). Steve Aoki, Datsik and Alvin Risk will be at the Coliseum in Tallahassee on Feb. 6. Steve will be at the Ultra Festival on Mar. 25. If you were at the show last night, you know you can hang with him today in Gainesville (but you need to follow him on Twitter to get the details).
