“The best thing about it is it’s healthy and quick,” says general manager Brandon Foster. “You don’t have to sit around and wait.” By Brian Steele BREAKFAST FOR DINNER Got that late-night craving for breakfast? The Pit serves breakfast pitas all day. We tried their Chicken Classic ($4.25) with slices of chicken breast, scrambled eggs, home fries, grilled mushrooms and onions, with a choice of cheese and sauce. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and you could tell all the ingredients were freshly made. It was our personal favorite and would satisfy us for any one of the usual three daily meals. Pita Pit offers six different breakfast pitas, and all of them are $4.25. A LIGHT LOAD If you’re watching carbs, have a go at one of their salads. Ranging in price from $5.25 to $5.75, the options include the Garden, Chicken Caesar and Green salads. The portions are generous and continue the theme of healthy—yet tasty—food. One of these salads would make a solid lunch, and you can take them in a box to go if you’re in a hurry. THE COLLEGE HOURS There’s a reason why the Pit is so popular in a college town. The restaurant is open until 1am on Sunday, and it stays open until almost dawn from Thursday until Saturday, when it closes at 4am. Monday through Wednesday it’s open from 8am until 3am. Brandon says service is “his thing,” and he encourages employees to take good care of customers while enjoying each others' company too.“I’ve had customers come up and tell me how wonderful these people are,” he says.
A SMOOTHER SIDE Feeling a little fruity? Pita Pit added smoothies recently, and all are affordable at $4. Filled with fresh fruit, there’s the Blu Bayou, Berry Go Round, Sippin' Citrus and the Banana Very Berry. All smoothies have at least two fruits with some juice and are blended with frozen vanilla yogurt. THE PITAS Of course, the pitas are the main attraction. We tried their Gyros ($5.25), the most popular item, and were quite pleased. The spiced beef had a good kick while still letting the Tzatzki sauce build up the real flavor. The feta cheese was quite strong, too, so be careful if Feta doesn’t make you feel betta’. The Chicken Breast ($5.75) and Philly Steak ($6) are also known crowd pleasers. You can also grab a basic deli meat pita with either Black Forest Ham or Turkey. FAST FACTS Phone Number: 352-692-4460; 352-692-4400
