Stubbies first opened in 2003 as an Australian-themed beer pub. When co-owner Berkeley Hoflund decided to add a German restaurant to the mix, she took a trip to the motherland to study styles unique to German bars. “Berkeley came home with pictures and recipes and a good idea of what aspects of the German culture she would include in her own bar,” says manager Steve Smith. It shows—the décor feels like it could be in Deutschland. The menu offers continental European favorites for both dinner and lunch, with seven different types of sausage and German signature dishes. Never experienced German cuisine before? We recommend the Sausage Fest. At $16, this feast is big enough to share. Order with a friend and get a taste of four different sausages served over a heaping side of sauerkraut with a choice of four types of specialty mustard.
BEER SELECTION The beer selection from around the world is appropriate for both beer connoisseurs and amateurs. Choose from one of the many beers on tap, which change weekly, or a bottle of their specialty beers from around the world. The selection can be overwhelming, but the staff is available to suggest a type to your liking. Got a sweet tooth? Try the very unusual (but delicious) chocolate stout or limbic flavor float, which is a sweet beer poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, for $1.50 added to the price of the beer.
When you walk into Stubbies, you’ll notice a Germany-shaped cutout filled with gold nameplates. This is the wall of champions. The challenge: Drink 100 different beers in one year. The prize: See your name in glory. Although this challenge may get a little pricey, about 100 people have already succeeded and more than 5,000 others have started one of the most demanding and tasty beer challenges in Gainesville. FAST FACTS Address: 9 and 13 W University Ave.

Located in the heart of downtown Gainesville, Stubbies and Steins offers a unique menu and a relaxed atmosphere. Despite being one of the only German-inspired restaurants north of Orlando, Stubbies’ cuisine is not the only reason both students and locals pour into this pub. The menu also includes more than 400 bottled beers, 18 draft beers and 30 wines.
A TASTE OF GERMANY
Looking for something lighter? The lunch menu offers a choice of one sausage, bread, a side dish and a choice of sauce for less than $9. Try the rare sides a la carte—the Warm German Potato Salad ($3) and Cucumber Salad ($2.25) were among our favorites.
