We caught up with 19-year-old INsite Cover Model Contest winner Abigail Dixon, fresh from her first official photoshoot, as she was preparing to walk the Gainesville Fashion Week runway—another first that we’re convinced will be the first of many.

Abigail was voted for by INsite readers out of three finalists, all models from Gainesville Fashion Week, as the face of the April issue. For her cover shoot, Abby posed on set at the INsite offices before gamely being whisked away for a renegade-style photoshoot just as the sun was setting on downtown Gainesville. And, model that she naturally is, she couldn’t help but catch admiring stares and pointed fingers along the way. You can see the results of the shoot, and behind-the-scenes video, at insitegainesville.com.
The University of Florida sophomore said she was surprised when she found out that she had won. “I actually didn’t think I was going to win,” she told us—she even convinced her social media-shy mom to get a Facebook account so that she could vote. The cover shoot was the first big photo shoot she has ever done, and although she was a little nervous, she was more excited than anything.
This Ft. Pierce native first considered modeling about a year ago, when her aunt, a photographer asked her if she’d be willing to be model for students in an advertising class. Then she auditioned to appear in Gainesville Fashion Week, and—no shocker here—was chosen from among more than 200 applicants to model in this month’s runway shows.
Despite the demanding schedule (she was between fittings when we chatted), her focus for now is primarily school. She also volunteers at Littlewood Elementary, working with special education kids, and loves helping kids succeed and reach their potential. She also likes to play tennis and cook. Still, the family, youth and community sciences major is now considering modeling more seriously after graduation. “It’s really fun, and I love fashion,” she says.
